About Naturopathy

Naturopathic Medicine Frequently Asked and Answered Questions (FAQs) provide detailed answers to a wide variety of consumer questions for a prospective patient of Naturopathic Medicine. A brief overview is included here for your convenience.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a unique practice of medicine that emphasizes prevention and promotion of self-healing (and education of patients) with an individualized patient centered approach.

Naturopathic Medicine is based on the following foundational principles:

  1. Do no harm
  2. Harness the healing power of nature
  3. Find the cause
  4. Treat the whole person
  5. Prescribe preventive medicine
  6. Be a doctor and a teacher

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

As of 2020 a naturopathic doctor (ND) is licensed to practice as a primary care physician in 22 American states, the district of Columbia, the US territories of Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and in 5 Canadian states. Most insurance companies cover naturopathic practice in the state of Washington. NDs graduate from an accredited 4 year post-graduate naturopathic medical school and undergo rigorous board certification prior to being approved a license to practice. Additional information on ND professional competencies and on how NDs are educated, trained, and certified can be found here.

NDs aim to treat underlying causes and seek opportunities to allow the body and immune system to self-heal with minimalistic intervention. NDs educate and inspire patients to take charge of their health. In Washington State NDs are authorized to prescribe legend drugs as well.

Apart from being primary care physicians, NDs can also work together with other physicians to provide coordinated care. This integrative patient-centric approach allows patients to get the best of both sides rather than having to choose between one physician or one treatment over the other.

•   Craniosacral Therapy

The craniosacral area of the body refers to the membrane and cerebrospinal fluid that protects the brain and the spinal cord. Imbalances in this area could potentially cause any number of sensory, motor, and/or neurological problems. These problems can manifest as muscle weakness, chronic pain, TMJ, fatigue, strained eyes, headache, and other health issues. Craniosacral treatment reduces stress to the nerve system and enables the body's original natural healing power.

•   Homeopathy

Homoeopathy or homeopathic medicine is a system of alternative medicine from 1796 based on the doctrine "like cures like" attributed to the German physician, Samuel Hahnemann. Insurance Coverage

Dr. Oyama currently accepts insurance as in-network provider for Aetna, Cigna, First Choice, Lifewise, Premera Blue Cross, Regence Blue Shield, & United Health Care. Tele-Consult is covered by most insurance plans as well. Please verify your plan's in-network coverage terms and conditions. It is possible that insurance might not adequately cover for services rendered.

If your insurance carrier is not on the in-network provider list above, Dr. Oyama may also be able to accept insurance as an out-of-network provider if your insurance plan allows for it. Please verify from your insurance carrier whether your policy has out-of-network provider coverage and if so what the associated terms and conditions are.
